Tank or Trap? The 10-Point Used Car Checklist

Ten checks that help you avoid the most common used-car mistakes โ€” before your money leaves your pocket.

Before you go โ€” 20 minutes at home

1. Research the exact year + engine, not just the model. Search "[year] [model] common problems" and check owner forums. The same model can be a tank one year and a trap the next โ€” one engine revision is all it takes.
2. Run the VIN for open recalls โ€” free at nhtsa.gov/recalls. An open safety recall the seller doesn't mention tells you how the car was maintained.
3. Check how long it's been listed. 30+ days on the market means either negotiating room or a problem other buyers already found. Both are worth knowing.
4. Price it before you see it. Look up KBB private-party value for the actual mileage and condition โ€” then subtract the cost of any known upcoming repairs. That number, not the asking price, is what the car costs.
5. Ask for service records before driving out. Documented history justifies top-of-range price. No records means you price in the worst case โ€” or don't go at all.

At the car โ€” 20 minutes on site

6. Arrive early and touch the hood. A warm engine before you arrive can hide cold-start knocks, smoke, and rough idle. Insist on a true cold start.
7. Look underneath. Fluid drips, crusty rust, and fresh undercoating (what is it covering?) tell you more than the paint ever will. No undercarriage photos in the listing? Now you know why you're looking.
8. Check every fluid yourself. Oil that's low or sludgy, coolant that's rusty, transmission fluid that's dark or smells burnt โ€” each one is a four-figure warning label.
9. Verify the title is clean and in the seller's name. Not a relative's, not "my buddy's" โ€” the person you're paying. Match the VIN on the title to the VIN on the dash.
10. The final gate: an independent pre-purchase inspection. Typically $100โ€“200 at a shop the seller doesn't choose โ€” the best money you'll spend in car buying. Make every offer contingent on it.

๐Ÿšฉ Walk away โ€” no negotiation โ€” when:

the seller refuses an independent inspection ยท the title isn't in their name ยท "ran when parked" ยท the price is far below market "because they need it gone today" ยท repairs are claimed but there are no receipts ยท they'll "only take cash tonight"
